Iphone Virus and Iphone Hacks?

I was browsing the web and noted that a lot of blogs and news sites have posting on the iphone virus and iphone hacking topic. I was intrigued so I did some researching and some connecting of the dots: this week is Black Hat Security Conference week and somebody must have demo’d some iphone hacking stuffs. My guess was right 🙂 quoting Cnet News

LAS VEGAS–Researchers have discovered a way to take complete control over an iPhone merely by sending special SMS messages and demonstrated it on my iPhone at the Black Hat security conference on Wednesday.

Although an attacker could exploit the hole to make calls, steal data, send text messages, and do basically anything that I can do with my iPhone, the researchers were kind and merely rendered it temporarily inoperable.

Here’s what happened: While I was talking on the phone to Charlie Miller, his partner, Collin Mulliner, sent me a text message from his phone. One minute I’m talking to Miller and the next minute my phone is dead, and this time it’s not AT&T’s fault. After a few seconds it came back to life, but I was not able to make or receive calls until I rebooted.

The name Charlie Miller rings a bell. Yup the same guy in the  Safari hack/Pwn2own early this year 🙂

Researching deeper into this topic, it seems that as of posting this article there is NO actual malware or virus exploiting this bug (yet). But what is alarming (but is not surprising for many) is that the vendor (in this case Apple) have not released a patch yet, even if the researchers have reported the bug for more than a month already.
Some media sources seemed to have “hyped” this development in Black Hat Conference and inferred to that an iphone virus will be launched on July 30. Not the first time that this kind of issues get hyped 🙁

Anyway, I will be on the lookout for new developments on this issue and if there is really an in-the-wild iphone virus I will update this blog post.

An Open Letter to President Barack Obama

Last year I posted some Obama and GMA in Manila video here in my blog. Little did I know that GMA’s dream of meeting Obama will really come true someday.

A day before their actual face to face meeting, I’m posting an open letter to President Barack Obama. Who wrote it, read on….

July 29, 2009

Washington District of Columbia
United States of America

Dear Mr. President,

We shared the wonderful jubilation of the American people during your historic election triumph. When you assumed office early this year, we rejoiced at the audacious hope that you inspired, and on your promise of change for the common good.

We joined all freedom loving people of the world who exulted when you declared that “those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent… are on the wrong side of history.”

The Filipino people share the same morals, ideals, and aspirations that define the envied way of life of the American people. Filipinos yearn for the same kind of leaders that the American people yearn for themselves; leaders who are imbued with the right values, lead principled lives, and govern with the highest ethical standards. The ideals of justice, democracy and the upliftment of human rights animate the Filipino people’s dreams of a better world in much the same way that these ideals animate the dreams of the American people.

Upon your invitation, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will have the chance to meet with you on July 30, 2009. In your meeting with Ms. Arroyo, it may serve you well to be mindful of Ms. Arroyo’s legacy of corruption, extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, bribery, election cheating, among others. We do not wish to belabor you with the details of these high crimes which have surely been documented and reported by the U.S. State Department to your Office.

The Filipino people also yearn for change from the effrontery of hopelessness and the curse of decadence that Ms. Arroyo represents. In your meeting with Ms. Arroyo, we feel confident that you will make clear to her that a Government that does not comply with Principles of Democracy and respect for Human Rights cannot have the approval and support of your administration. We implore you Mr. President to inspire hope and be an instrument of change for the common good of the long suffering Filipino people.

July 26, 2009 is Blog Action Day

Today is Blog Action Day 2009.

This blog post  is my own little way of expressing my support to the NO to Con-Ass movement.

Tomorrow, GMA will deliver her SONA (State of the Nation Address). I don’t know if it will be the usual stuff: look-good-feel-good statistics and same old rhetoric. I am not inclined to listen (maybe I will read the transcript via the news/web if I have time). But I hope her allies do not attempt another railroading sneaky moves there.

This post may not be a surprise for some since I have blogged my political views here:

Other bloggers post on today’s Blog Action Day:

Willie Revillame Died?

Checking my tweets and checking some blog posting, I stumbled upon this info: Willie Revillame Died

I cannot confirm the authenticity of this info, but I’m posting it anyway to get some feedback from the fellow bloggers and readers.

I’m not posting this because that I hate Willie and his noontime show. I wish him well and hope this info is not true. But honestly speaking,  I don’t like his TV Show and hate the way they capitalize on the “pity” and “paawa effect” of the contestants of his Wowowee show.

But many questions came into my mind when reading the words: Willie Revillame Died.

Is this info true? Or it is just a bad rumor?
Is this just some plain cheap gimmick?
Or is this just some google glitch?

Facebook Farm Town Cheats and Tips Part 3

This is the part 3 of my Facebook Farm Town Cheats and Tips series.

This week, Farm Town team deployed another set of cool updates.

First, you can now plow by 1’s, 2’s or by 4’s tiles.

You can do this if you are plowing your own fields. But why plow your own fields, when you can let your friends do it for you (and then both of you earn experience points).

I am impressed at Farm Town Dev Team. They are very creative and they want to make Farm Towners life more enjoyable. One of the most boring task in Farm Town (and the more tedious too I guess) is to plow and plant seeds. These 2 tasks take some time to complete but its important since both give out decent experience points and is need by players to level up in the game and earn coins. But now the developers have created a new feature that will enable the farmer to queue tasks (like planting seeds and plowing the tiles), no need to wait for the 100% bar to finish. How to use this feature? Just go to the preference button and uncheck the option “Wait for each Plow/Plant”). Remember: uncheck it ok?

So whats the good thing about this feature? See image below:

Plowing and planting galore. No need to wait for the 100% bar to complete.

Hope you like this post.

If you are also a farm town farmer and want to share your experience, please leave some comments here.

WordPress 2.8.2 and Other Updates

I updated to WordPress 2.8.2 today. I know it’s been 2 weeks since I updated to 2.8.1 and you might be wondering why the WP updates seems so fast nowadays. Quoting official wordpress site:

WordPress 2.8.2 fixes an XSS vulnerability. Comment author URLs were not fully sanitized when displayed in the admin. This could be exploited to redirect you away from the admin to another site. Download 2.8.2 or automatically upgrade from the Tools->Upgrade page of your blog’s admin.

I know the risks and damage potential of cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities and the need to patch it as soon as possible hence this speedy action. Thanks to the wordpress devs for the quick patch availability.

And similar to my other wordpress updates post, I am sharing some topics that I am brewing for this blog. For me this is an good practice and benefit is 2 parts

  1. To inform the readers on what to expect next
  2. Put some pressure on me (the author) to stick to the blog post game plan.

For the next two weeks I plan to write something about:

Sorry if the topics are vague or misleading. But I will try to give details when its ready, so watch out for it ok?

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at Trinoma Cinema THX

Raven and I watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at the Trinoma THX Cinema last weekend. We reserved tickets via sureseats.com since we know that this is the first weekend of the film showing. It’s our first time to try Trinoma’s Lazy Boy seats and we really had a great time watching the movie.

I want to post some video trailer from youtube, but most of the video trailers I saw have disabled the embed URL hence I will just continue with my blog post without the video.

So my feedback (don’t worry I will not post some spoiler 🙂 )
1. Trinoma Lazy Boy+THX is a cool experience. Very comfortable and it provides a relaxing experience.

2. I understand that that it is really a challenge to translate the 652 pages of the book into a 152-minute movie, but my personal feeling is HP6:  Half Blood Prince is kinda “bitin”. For the benefit of the non-pinoy readers of this blog, the word “Bitin” is filipino and it roughly translates to english as “hanging position” or some sort of a “cliffhanger”. Being a Harry Potter fan, I’m not surprised at the ending, but I am looking forward for some scenes at the end. The good thing about that “bitin” feeling is that it makes me (and I hope the other Harry Potter fans crave more for the movie of the last book : Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Overall the movie is good. And I recommend that you watch it (even you are not a fan of the book).

If you have watched the movie too and like to share your experience, feel free to leave some comments here.

Facebook Farm Town Cheats and Tips Part 2

Last week Facebook Farm Town Game rolled out some cool updates. Just like my Farm Town Cheats post, I’m sharing them here:
1. First of all, you can now hire your friends, buddies and neighbors to plow your farm. In my opinion is a very creative move from the Farm Town Team since this new feature enables more interaction among Facebook online friends. Hiring your friends to plow your farm enables them you to save coins in plowing (less 50% if friend is a neighbor, less 25% otherwise) and let you and your friend earn experience points. Great idea from the developers.

2. The update also introduced some new seeds that you can plant.

This raspberry seeds is a good choice for the power levelers (ready to harvest in 2 hours)

cottonCotton is a good choice for middle level farmers who wants long harvest time.

new seeds

And these new seeds are very cool especially for high level players. Good yield on coins (for both the farmer and the harvester). I guess they will start to be unlocked by level 26.

3. Farm Town Trophy and Rewards system also have some major modifications

Farm Town Trophy 1

From the previous 8 point system, the trophy to be collected grew to 14.

Farm Town Trophy 24. They also updated the flower seeds available to the players.

White Rose

Pharma-related Spam SMS in the Philippines

It seems that pharmacy related Spam SMS are now invading the Philippines. Good thing they are yet using some “advanced” method of sms sending that some scammer/s are using here in the country.

Here is what I’ve gotten hold this week:
