SMS Scam: This is my New Roaming Number

We got hold of a new SMS scam. Actually this is not new, but this sms message has been discussed in the comments of my previous Hon Load Mo Ako text scam post. I am just distressed that after the sad events brought by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, these scammers are back to their scheming activities too soon.

The sms that Raven and I got looks like this:

kmsta kau, I2 na new roaming # ko nsimblock kc ung dati ko #, nga pla may ipa2dala me jang pa2kage at kunting pera bhala na kau, meron ding cp meron ka dun. Kanyakanya nem kau dun.sya bka pwd loadan nyo ako ng 300 para mkatxt ako jan. Ms na ms ko na kau. Godbless.

Sender # +639392207784

To the benefit of my non-Filipino readers I am roughly translating it in English.

How are you? This is my new roaming number. My previous number got sim blocked. By the way, I will send home some package and some money too, in the package there are some cell phone units, you can get one. Can you load me 300 pesos so that I can sent text/sms message. I miss you all so much! God Bless.

Why it is some sort of a “hit” to Filipinos? I assume that there are many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) abroad who are fond of using a roaming sim cards (they argued that its cheaper to for their loved ones in PH to send SMS there). Electronic mobile phone loading businesses are also popular that even the neighborhood store have one (hence: the monetization vehicle is present). One of the top reasons I believe is that some Filipinos are so trusting and many pinoys are just not informed that such schemes exist, so this is some personal advocacy of mine to expose known SMS scam in this blog.

My advise is simple: Be paranoid. Do not trust unknown numbers sending sms.

Spiderham also received some variant of the scam, you can find his post and advise in his Scams 101: New SMS scam uncovered

I would like to share a comment of a reader that was recently victimized:

Hi..nakakahiya man but unfortunately, ako yata ang pinakalatest victim ng scam na to.actually i want to keep it na lang sana to myself kasi feeling ko ang tanga ko talaga. gaya ng mga kwento nyo, i received a text last thursday night (October 8, 2009), saying na “ETO YUNG NEW ROAMING NUMBER KO, NAGPALIT AKO NG NUMBER KSI LAGENG WALANG SIGNAL YUNGG DATI KONG NUMBER, MAY PADALA KONG PACKAGE WITH CELLPHONE AND MONEY NEXT WEEK, ANTAYIN NYO HA..TNX AND MISS YOU ALL”..pero walang name kung sino sya, so i assume na sya yung pamangkin ko n nsa somewhere in middle east.so I txtd back “sean kaw b yan?” and sbi nya “yes ako nga to”.so nagtiwala na ko kasi super close talga kmi nung pamangkin ko tsaka sobrang thankful ako sa kanya kasi lage syang nagpapadala ng mga gamit for may baby and lage syang nagttx sa kin.then after a couple of txt nag request sya n pa loadan ko sya ng 300, niloadan ko naman ksi talgang laht ng request ng pamangkin ko sinusunod ko.after ko sya maloadan, nag nag text pa ng “thank you”…then the following morning Oct.9 nagtx ulet and dun n nagsimula na mag propose ng business about prepaid cards, sabi nya nabebenta ng 1,320 yung 500 na smart en globe dun..to make the story short pinadalhan ko sya ng 500 20smart en 20globe cards via text..nang ganun kadali since i have business kseh ng prepaids cards so madami ako stocks talga.after ko masend s kanya lahat ng prepaid dun ako biglang kinutuban na baka hindi sya yung pamangkin ko..so tinawagan ko yung pamangkin ko sa landline nya sa abroad en BOOOOM! yun na hindi nga sya yung katx ko!grabe para kong hihimatayin talga!!!kasi naloko ko ng ganun kadali, hindi na ko nag isip!!!nasilaw kasi ko sa laki ng kikitain na halos triple ang tubo, kya parang di na ko nag isip and na excite ako agad…ayun almost 20k ang nawala sa kin..eto yung number nung ngtxt sa kin:

October 15, 2009 is Blog Action Day

I support the Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change on October 15, 2009.

I know is it is sad that we have to taste the catastrophic effects of Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) before I act and do something meaningful for this climate change issue, but it is never too late to make a stand.

Free Six Info: Facebook Cafe World Cheats and Tips

Cafe World is a new craze for those Facebook fanatics out there. You might he searching for some Cafe World cheats or tips, so in the in the tradition of my six Fishville Cheats, my six Petville Cheats, my six social city cheats, my six Mafia Wars Cheats, my six Farm Town Cheats,  my six Mybrute Cheats, my six Philippine Lotto tips, my six tagalog love quotes and my Free Six Video posts, I am sharing some six info, tips and cheats for Facebook Cafe World.

#1. Ok some basics first. Cafe World is a Facebook game application developed by Zynga. Zynga of course is the same company behind the popular Facebook games like Mafia Wars, Zynga Hold ‘em Poker, Farmville, YoVille, Vampire Wars and Roller Coaster Kingdom. A screen shot of my Menardconnect Cafe

Buzz Rating 105 at Level 5
Buzz Rating 105 at Level 5

Note: 105 is the highest buzz rating in Cafe World

#2. Trap your waiter and cook inside a corner of your restaurant or cafe. OK how do you do this? Just rearrange your counter and stove so that your cook and waiter cannot move freely. To illustrate this further here is a screenshot of my cafe with the cook and the waiter trapped.

Menardconnect Cafe "Trap"

What is the purpose of this tip? So that the food will be automatically served.

Update: Make sure that you rotate the food counter so that it will face the trap area (and not the food service/dining area)

#3. Use the gifts when there are many people dining in your cafe. The gifts are the one that your Cafe World friends and neighbors give you. These gifts provide extra coins and for every people dining in you, they will provide extra coins per person dining in the restaurant.

#4. Remove the door when you got no food to serve. This is like closing you cafe. When you have no food to serve in your food counter, people coming in your cafe will be disappointed and will result to lower buzz rating. So to avoid this you can click the customize icon (chair icon) and drag the door into the inventory. To open your cafe, just put back the door to the wall.

#5. Plan your next online time so that you can know what to cook in the stove. When you will be online in Facebook in the next 1~2 hours, I suggest you can cook the 15-minute (Super Chunky Fruit Salad) or the 30-minute recipe (Jumbo Shrimp Cocktails). If you will be online again on the next day, I suggest cooking the 1-day (Spitfire roasted chicken or Herbed Halibut or the Crab Bisque) or the 2-day recipe (Home-style pot roast). Remember that the cooking time is also the same length of time that the food stays fresh after cooking.

#6. And last but definitely not the least: Do not cheat! Why? Like what I advised on my Mafia Wars Cheats, Farm Town Cheats and Mybrute Cheats posts: Cheaters never win! Cafe World is a fun and social game, and there is no need to cheat. Also I highly recommend that you DO NOT run executable programs that supposedly will do some cheat and tricks for you and your Cafe or Restaurant. Many sites are offering these kinds of tools and cheat engines and my advise is stay on the safe side. If you cannot determine if the file is good or bad (by knowing exactly what the file is doing on the system and registry level via reverse engineering, system monitoring, etc.) then do not try to run it in your personal computer. There are a lot of malware, spyware, keyloggers, and trojan downloaders out there that are masquerading as cheat tools and engines. Be vigilant and be safe. OK?

I hope you like my Facebook Cafe World Cheats and Tips post.

I will do a follow up articles when I discover more tips and tricks for Facebook Cafe World.

Photosketch is Cool!

Photosketch is a new cool imaging buzzword. Imagine a tool that will let you sketch images, tag them with textdescription, sketch some other image and tag it and input to the system add some background description and what you get: a high quality image fascinatingly similar to the one you have just sketched. To describe it more here is a video:

PhotoSketch: Internet Image Montage from tao chen on Vimeo.

Their abstact:

We present a system that composes a realistic picture from a simple freehand sketch annotated with text labels. The composed picture is generated by seamlessly stitching several photographs in agreement with the sketch and text labels; these are found by searching the Internet. Although online image search generates many inappropriate results, our system is able to automatically select suitable photographs to generate a high quality composition, using a filtering scheme to exclude undesirable images. We also provide a novel image blending algorithm to allow seamless image composition. Each blending result is given a numeric score, allowing us to find an optimal combination of discovered images. Experimental results show the method is very successful; we also evaluate our system using the results from two user studies.

Some bloggers are tagging this as the next Photoshop. Sorry but I have to disagree. I once read in Seth Godin’s blog:

Don’t try to be the ‘next’. Instead, try to be the other, the changer, the new

I am not a photo or imaging expert. But this Photosketch is a new concept for me and I hope that Photosketch will be some sort of a changer, the One that may innovate the imaging game.

TrendLabs Blogcon Part 03

September 22, 2009 was TrendLabs Blogcon Day 3. We had the men behind Hay!Men! Ang Blog ng Tunay na Lalake! This is the first time that  TrendLabs Blogcon had many guests so the presentation setup was like a panel discussion.

Day 3 was a FUN!!! I was initially planning to do live tweeting, but I can’t stop myself from laughing so I gave up and let @TL_Blogcon do the live tweeting. The discussion started with their controversial manifesto and it revolved to be an enjoyable and enlightening presentation.

And of course the in the tradition of my six Mafia Wars Cheats post, my six Cafe World Cheats post, my six Farm Town Cheats post, my six Mybrute Cheats post, my six Philippine Lotto tips post and my Free Six Video post, I am sharing my six insights on the Day 3 session.

  1. Comment policy. I admit that before the session, I was really disappointed at TNL’s blog comments (this is the main reason why I stopped reading their blog), but after the authors’ explanation of their blog, its history, its evolution, their policies on posting articles and comments, I understood their blog more and I find this strategy applicable for their blog. They regained one reader: me 🙂
  2. You really cannot please everybody. Since Hay!Men! Blog discusses controversial issues its normal that they have loyalists/fans as well haters too.
  3. The importance of Right Timing. Timing is really important in blogging and one of their techniques is posting hot topics that their readers are raving for. Being updated on the current events helped them to relate more to their readers.
  4. On Sensitivity. I appreciate what they did when President Cory died; they just posted a yellow ribbon and not posted their “usual” TnL/DTnL stuffs. Of course we know what happened: the readers and their comments continue it for them, but for me that is is reader’s contribution to their blog.
  5. Collaborative blogging is challenging. But if you and your blog teammates can pull it through it is very rewarding.
  6. Different bloggers have different styles of blogging. You have to pick what will fit you and what wont.

It is really good that TrendLabs have give us these Blogcon sessions and let us experience different flavors of blogging.

To the guys behind Hay!Men! Ang Blog ng Tunay na Lalake: Thank you for sharing to us your time and your blogging experience! More power to you and your blog!!!

I am excited for the final TrendLabs Blogcon session. See you in TrendLabs Blogcon Day 4 tomorrow!

Mafia Wars Cheats and Tips Part 4: Readers Contribution

A reader commented on my Mafia Wars Cheats and Tips Part 2 post. The comment is very enlightening but since it does not conform with my comment policy and thus I cannot post in in the comment section. I have decided to highlight the comment as another post since it will be very helpful to many Mafia Wars players.

You on not giving the best advice. Some of these are beginners mistakes. Don’t deposit your US money. The bank takes 10% and it not likely you will be robbed or attacked for more than 10%. I average about 1 or 2% loss per day at $960 million an hour. Only bank it if you intend to sale all of your gold properties. But this only matters if you really love the money factor. Some say after a certain point the $ is least important. As in you have 850 Billion or 4 Trillion you won’t need to earn or you can survive fine off of higher level jobs (US). Don’t sale your building sites or Mafia Mikes. They cant be robbed. Don’t heal yourself. You cant be robbed or attacked if your health is below 20%. So if you keep healing your self you just give crews more chances to rob and attack you. Don’t invest skill points in health. when you auto rob or attack using a bookmarklets you will automatically renew your health as needed. Repair your properties strategically. If you’re being robbed on a regular basis don’t repair and the robber will stop robbing you because your will be at the maximum robbery level. Protecting your property is usually a bad idea. They will usually charge 1 1/4 your hourly income of your total properties to protect them. It’s best to wait the robbery or attacks out.

Thanks K James for the very informative comment. I admit that I am new to the Mafia Wars game but I have this passion for sharing knowledge via my blog and I am very thankful that you visited and shared your thoughts and expertise in the game.

And in the In the tradition of my free six video, my six Mybrute cheats and tips post, my six Farm Town cheats post and my six Mafia Wars Cheats and Tips post, I am sharing some six insights on your comment to my mafia wars cheats post:

  1. Agree on: Don’t deposit your US money. The bank takes 10% and it not likely you will be robbed or attacked for more than 10%. Although I believe Mafia Wars Cuba money mechanics are different to New York part so I will stick to my Always use Bank whenever in Cuba.
  2. Agree also on: Don’t sale your building sites or Mafia Mikes. They cant be robbed. Mafia Mikes are based on the number of Mafia Friends and I believe it is good investment.
  3. I have mixed thoughts on: Don’t heal yourself. You cant be robbed or attacked if your health is below 20%. I get your point on the saving money part by not allowing yourself to be robbed. But what if you do not want your mafia to be iced or whacked?
  4. Agree on: Don’t invest skill points in health. This is really a beginner’s mistake that many players make because of some early stages in New York you to do battle out some minor boss to get some boosts.
  5. Mixed thoughts also on:  Repair your properties strategically. If you’re being robbed on a regular basis don’t repair and the robber will stop robbing you because your will be at the maximum robbery level. I like the last part of your comment more.
  6. Agree on: Protecting your property is usually a bad idea. They will usually charge 1 1/4 your hourly income of your total properties to protect them. For my current level now I buy properties, protect them and get robbed really is a big waste of money. I would rather focus on other tasks that will have greater value. What I usually do now is buy and sell properties that have some achievement points.

Again thanks to K James for this wonderful comment.

Rio de Janeiro Brazil 2016 Olympics

Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics. The Brazilian city will host the first ever Summer Olympics in the South American continent. Rio de Janeiro beat rival Olympic bidding cities Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago. I was rooting for the early favorite city (Chicago) since I had the chance to drop by O’Hare Airport (via connecting flight) a few months back and they impressed me with their olympic bid and preparations. But I think the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a great choice with Brazil and Rio De Janeiro.

Congratulations to Rio de Janeiro and the whole Brazilian people!!! This early I’m thinking of ways on how I can join you in 2016 summer Olympics 😀

Support Jehzlau Concepts, Jim Paredes and other Pinoy Bloggers in the Nuffnang Asia Pacific Blog Awards

I was thinking of a crazy and funny blog post last week. I initially outlined it as “Jehzlau at Jim: Ituloy ang Laban” making it sound like the Liberal Party’s prexy and vice prexy campaign 🙂 I even thought of scraping Jehz’ Blue Stickman images and tweak it to make it raise it hands and look like two candidates posing for a campaign poster. But the craziness in me subsided after the event that transpired over the weekend 🙁 but my support to the Filipino bloggers still remain and this is the main reason for this post.

This is the list of 8 Filipino bloggers who need our support in the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards:

Let’s support them by voting for them in the Nuffnang Asia-Pacific Blog Awards. I have copied the blog code from Jehzlau’s blog entry and placed it in my sidebar or you can directly cast your vote on the Nuffnang site. You can also vote every 2 hours.

Good luck to Jehz, Jim and all the Pinoy Bloggers nominated there!!!
