New Facebook Hoax 2012: Effects of Cold Water Heart Attack Hoax

I got another Facebook share from my inspiring Facebook friends claiming that drinking cold water after meals will cause oil sludge build up and will eventually cause heart attack. Scary?

The Facebook share comes as a photo share with an illustration of the heart in pink background and some warning text. The image comes with the header, EFFECTS OF COLD WATER and with the opening lines: “Please be a true friend and send this article to all your friends you care about“:

The image in the text then details a warning to those who like to drink cold water after meals, because supposedly the cold water will solidify the oily stuff the person consumes and will turn the oil into sludge. The oily sludge reacts with the acid and then other usual scare tactics blah blah blah then it will lead to heart attack.

Why I find it hoaxy and spammy? It uses the usual tactics, the use of words to relate to emotions, get sympathy and entices user into forwarding or sharing.
1. Giveaway hoax opening line:”Please be a true friend and send this article to all your friends you care about
2. Giving Medical and Statistics related data (not backed up by anything): “A cardiologist says that if everyone who reads this message sends it to 10 people you can be sure that we’ll save at least one life
3. Giveaway hoax closing line: “Its never late, forward soon” .

Disclaimer: I am not a medical expert so I may be wrong here.

But my gut feel and common sense suggest that I should blog about this false warning.

Really, I am smiling about the sending to 10 people; it was a basic email hoax catchphrase some years back. So I guess this Effects of Cold Water Heart Attack warning is originally from email hoax spam before and is now converted to fit Facebook share and other social network re-sharing mechanism.

Doing some more research on this topic points that this is a confirmed hoax as it uses older text from old email hoax. Read related notification at snopes.com

http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/coldwater.asp

I strongly suggest that we DO NOT SPREAD or SHARE these kinds of Facebook hoax.

Palawan. More Fun in the Philippines!!!

Raven and I went to Palawan last month to celebrate our anniversary. We went to Puerto Princesa Underground River, we toured the islands in Honda Bay, and we also roamed around Puerto Princesa to really experience that It’s More Fun In The Philippines.

In the tradition of my six cafe world cheats, six free android fix, six free wow mount, my free six video, and six tagalog love quotes posts, I am sharing some six pictures from Palawan.
First is the rock lobster we had in Isla Pandan during our Honda Bay Tour

Add up some Alimasag (Crabs) too

And the other fare that we had for lunch in Isla Pandan (shrimp, pork chop, inihaw na isda atbp.)

Next pit stop is Badjao Seafront Restaurant, a must visit resto when you are in Puerto Princesa Palawan.

We had Spicy Squid, Garlic and Butter Lobster (again haha), Eggplant salad (see I’m eating veggies now) and local clam soup.

Last 2 pics taken at Kalui, another must visit resto when you are in Puerto Princesa Palawan.

The garlic prawn we had was really good!

And our Fruit Bowl dessert was really unique!

The Palawan pics share seems to be “bitin” (limited by free six series 🙂 ) .

Will try to sort more photos and post more about our great Palawan experience in the future (maybe a part 2 and part 3 will be coming soon).

For those who have not visited Palawan yet, I suggest you start planning as soon as possible.

Because: Palawan. It’s More Fun in the Philippines!!!

Facebook Angry Birds Cheats and Tips

Angry Birds is now on Facebook!!! It all started on Valentine’ Day last week, I blogged about it here.

Are you looking for some Facebook Angry Birds Cheats or Facebook Angry Birds Tips then you are in the right place 🙂

I have played Facebook Angry Birds and its great! Facebook Angry Birds is like the original Angry Birds app for iPhone and Android but with a twist 🙂

Starting the game you will have the familiar episodes (Poached Eggs and Mighty Hoax) and the new  Surf and Turf Facebook exclusive episode.

So in the tradition of my six cafe world cheats, my six free android fix, my six free wow mount, my free six video posts, here are some six Facebook Angry Birds Cheats and Tips worth sharing

#1. Facebook Angry Birds have power-ups and knowing when to use the power ups will definitely give you advantage.

Here are some examples of the Facebook Angry Birds power ups

#2. BirdQuake Power Up will definitely cause a Quake and Rattle the Battle

#3. King Sling Power Up will boost and get you maximum velocity

#4. Sling Scope Power Up will help you target the Bad Piggies more accurately, so that you don’t shoot in the dark

#5. Super Seed Power Up will literally Super Size your Angry Birds

#6. And last but not the least: Do not cheat! Why? Cheaters never win!!!!

Angry Birds is a fun game and Facebook Angry Birds adds the social and friends dimension, so enjoy the game with your Facebook friends. Keeping the security mindset (always a core message for this blog), I highly recommend that you DO NOT run executable programs/apps that supposedly will do some magic trick for your Facebook Angry Birds. There are sites that are offering these kinds of tools and cheat engines and my advise is stay on the safe side. If you cannot determine if the app is good or bad (by knowing exactly what the app/exe is doing on the system/registry level (via reverse engineering or system monitoring, etc.) then DO NOT try to run it in your machine (whether you got a PC or Mac). Btw, this applies to your Android and iOS devices too! There are a lots of malware, spyware, keyloggers, and trojan downloaders out there that are masquerading as cheat tools and engines and fan apps.

I hope you like my Facebook Angry Birds post!!!

I will try to research and give more Facebook Angry Birds tips soon so visit this blog often 🙂

HijackThis Is Now Open Source

If you love to do computer diagnostics for possible malware and spyware infection, you will definitely know the HijackThis tool.

HijackThis (or HJT as we fondly call it) is a free tool that scans the computer to find software settings changed by malicious files (read malware, spyware and other potentially unwanted programs). HijackThis also have a good reporting tool that enables the community of experts to analyze and provide fix to the problem.

As per Trend Micro press release last Feb. 17, 2012, HijackThis is now an open source application and the Hijackthis source code is available via sourceforge.net.

Quoting the press release:

Trend Micro has offered HijackThis as a free tool since acquiring the antispyware freeware tool from its Netherlands-based creator, Merijn Bellekom in 2007. By then, it had already been downloaded more than 10 million times and was often used to submit logs to online discussion and help forums, such as Castlecops.com, Majorgeeks.com and Spywareinfo.com, to elicit comments that could help in cleaning infected desktops.

The press release also quoted the original HijackThis creator, Merijn Bellekom saying “This means that other people can build on a solid base to create or improve their own anti-malware tools”.

In my opinion this is really good news for the security community as a lot of online help forums (not just Castlecops, Majorgeeks and Spywareinfo community) uses the tool heavily. A win-win for Trend Micro and the infosec community if you will ask me 🙂

For more details on Hijackthis going Open Source kindly visit the Trend Micro press release.

Angry Birds Space Launch on March 22

Our favorite furious fowl, Angry Birds, is launching into orbit this March 22, 2012.

Meet the newest addition to the Angry Birds family: Angry Birds Space!!!

Video credit: youtube.com and Rovio Mobile

Quoting the official Rovio Blog:

We are VERY excited to announce our next game: Angry Birds Space! It’s going to be the biggest game launch since the original Angry Birds!

Angry Birds Space is a completely new game with innovative new gameplay, but with some of the familiar Angry Birds elements that fans already know and love — plus some surprises!

Wow! The Angry Birds are conquering the outer space now! Exciting!

Rovio is keeping the excitement on a high level and did not share much details about the newest game. The Angry Birds Space video teaser just shared the subtitle “Its one small fling for a bird, one quantum leap for birdkind“.

They also promised announce more information early March, and on launch date (March 22) they will launch Angry Birds Space simultaneously in mobile gaming, animation, retail, and publishing.

My question to Rovio folks: Will we also be seeing the cute angry pigs in Angry Birds Space?

I will definitely keep an eye out for this newest Angry Birds Space game.

Hopefully they also release simultaneously in Android, iOS and other platforms.

Rebuilding the Broken Links Page

I messed up my links and blogroll page last month when I was experimenting with my blog migration and other blog settings.

Good thing I found some workaround solution recently (this may be worth another post in the future) but the restoration entails a lot of manual work and I am just doing it over the weekends.

So to my blogger friends, if we have exchanged links before but your site is not my links page yet, kindly drop me a note via my contact page and I will add you back.

To my new readers (and soon-to-be blogger friends): I’m open to link exchanges. Drop me a note via my contact page too so that we can discuss!

Good #Security Move From Twitter

Twitter announced yesterday that HTTPS will be turned on by default for all Twitter.com users.

Quoting the Official Twitter Blog post:

Now, HTTPS will be on by default for all users, whenever you sign in to Twitter.com. If you prefer not use it, you can turn it off on your Account Settings page. HTTPS is one of the best ways to keep your account safe and it will only get better as we continue to improve HTTPS support on our web and mobile clients.

In my opinion this is really a good security move from Twitter as HTTPS is more secure than plain HTTP.

Yes, I understand that HTTPS is not foolproof but at least it will provide some layer of protection for twitter.com web and mobile web users.

I did some comparison before and noted that Twitter and Facebook both provides HTTPS as an opt-in security option while Google+ have it as default. Not sure if this is still the case for Facebook and Google+.

Kudos to the Twitter Team for making this commendable security move!

Googtorola Gets Green Light from European Commission and US DOJ

Some good news for Google (and for Motorola and Android too 😀 )! Their Googtorola Deal gets the EU’s regulatory nod and US DOJ’s clearance.

Quoting the Official Google Blog:

We’re happy that today the European Commission approved our proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility, which we announced in August. This is an important milestone in the approval process and it moves us closer to closing the deal. We are now just waiting for decisions from a few other jurisdictions before we can close this transaction.

At the last part of the article an update is posted that mentioned that US Department of Justice has closed its investigation on the Motorola Mobility acquisition by Google.

So I guess this is double “For The Win” for Google this Valentine’s Day 🙂

New Facebook Hoax 2012: Shrimp + Vitamin C = Arsenic Poisoning?

Again I got another Facebook share from my caring Facebook friends claiming a woman suddenly passed away unexpectedly with signs of bleeding from her ears, nose, mouth and eyes… because of eating Shrimp and Vitamin C!!! Yup! Another Say What moment from me: Shrimps and Vitamin C!!!

The Facebook Share comes with a picture of a woman with blood flowing on her face.

Note: Image edited to protect privacy of the woman in the photo.

The text after the photo goes like this:

Please read if you eat shrimps – Very Educative:
A woman suddenly died unexpectedly with signs of bleeding from her ears, nose, mouth & eyes.

After a preliminary autopsy it was diagnosed that death was due to arsenic poisoning.
Where did the arsenic come from?

The police launched an in-depth and extensive investigation. A medical school professor was invited to come to solve the case.
The professor carefully looked at the contents. In less than half an hour, the mystery was solved.
The professor said: ‘The deceased did not commit suicide and neither was she murdered, she died of accidental death due to ignorance!’
Everyone was puzzled, why accidental death?
The professor said: ‘The arsenic was produced in the stomach of the deceased.’ The deceased used to take ‘Vitamin C‘ everyday, which in itself is not a problem.
The problem was that she ate a large portion of shrimp/prawn during dinner. Eating shrimp/prawn is not the problem that’s why nothing happened to her family even though they had the same shrimp/prawn. However at the same time the deceased also took ‘vitamin C‘, that is where the problem was!

Researchers at the University of Chicago in the United States , found through experiments, food such as soft-shell contain much higher concentration of five
potassium arsenic compounds.

Such fresh food by itself has no toxic effects on the human body.

However, in taking ‘vitamin C‘, chemical reaction occurs and the original non-toxic elements change to toxic elements.

Arsenic poisoning has magma role and can cause paralysis to the small blood vessels. Therefore, a person who dies of arsenic poisoning will show signs of bleeding from the ears, nose, mouth & eyes. Thus as a precautionary measure,

DO NOT eat shrimp/prawn when taking ‘vitamin C‘.

After reading this; please do not be stingy. Re-share to your friends.

Very educative indeed!!!

But wait… This one is familiar because I got it before via email (maybe some 8~9 years ago, I cannot recall when was it exactly) and it was just an email hoax then but now it got recycled to fit into the “IN” thing nowadays: Facebook Share and other social media sites sharing.

Why I still remember it? Because I have some allergy with shrimps before so I take emails and warnings about shrimps seriously.

The hoax give-away phrase was the “Researchers at the University of Chicago in the United States, found through experiments, food such as soft-shell contain much higher concentration of five potassium arsenic compounds” – it is the usual attempt to have vague reference to a reputable source but is not backed up by real scientific data.

Still not convinced? Then read this:

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/shrimp.asp

I therefore conclude that Shrimp/Prawn + Vitamin C will result to Arsenic Poisoning = Recycled Email Hoax = New Facebook Hoax 2012

Some disclaimer: If you really have food allergies (e.g. seafood/shrimp/prawn) don’t eat shrimps/prawns without consulting with your doctor first!
