Bloggers for Freedom

I just signed the Bloggers for Freedom statement.

Statement: Bloggers for Freedom

We concerned Filipino bloggers stand for the rights to free expression and to free speech. And our first responsibility is to protect these rights.

We thus stand with Rappler, its right to exist, the rights of its working journalists and contributors, and the rights of its community of readers.

We stand against moves to silence and scare journalists, bloggers and media practitioners just because the President and his ardent supporters dislike their news and views.

Now is a time for making choices amid battles between truth and lies, debate and dissonance, democracy and dictatorship.

We sign our names here to tell everyone we have made a choice. We are bloggers for freedom.

As a blogger I stand for the rights to free expression and to free speech.

As I mentioned in my post last year, I really missed the good ol’ days when blogging was so simple 🙁 but as they say past is past na talaga and we need to live in this changing and challenging times, so laban lang!

Will post more thoughts on this topic and other bloggers link here soon.

Repost: Stroke Rehabilitation: Road to Recovery

Note:

This is a repost of an article from Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (pchrd.dost.gov.ph). Because I find it helpful in my Philippines stroke rehabilitation researches for my recovering brother I am reposting it here at menardconnect.com.

Stroke Rehabilitation: Road to Recovery

Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability in the Philippines. Thousands of Filipinos are living with the effects of stroke.

These effects may mean that you must change, relearn or redefine how you live. The goals of rehabilitation are to build strength, capability, and confidence so that you can continue your daily activities despite possible impairments. New discoveries and techniques may enhance the recovery process. In the future, these advances may even allow for the repair or replacement of damaged brain cells.

What Happens In The Brain

Stroke occurs when the supply of blood that normally nourishes the brain is reduced. It can happen in two ways  when blood flow to brain tissue is blocked, or if blood leaks into the brain or into tissues surrounding the brain. Stroke affects brain cells that send signals controlling almost every function in the body (see illustration). When brain tissue is damaged, it can have far-ranging effects including:

  • Physical. Paralysis, stiffness, weakness, a loss of feeling or lack of coordination may affect your face, arm or a leg, or an entire side of your body. You also may have balance problems; visual deficits, including blindness in one or both eyes; or trouble speaking or swallowing.
  • Cognitive. The way you think, remember or interact with others or perceive the world around you may be affected. Perceptual changes may make it harder for you to understand what you feel, see or hear. You may also have difficulty understanding what you read or what people say.
  • Psychological. Stroke can affect you by damaging an area of your brain that’s involved in producing emotions. You may feel helpless, frustrated, and uninterested in activities you once enjoyed. You may cry or laugh more easily or have sudden mood swings for no apparent reason. Depression, grief, irritability, and fatigue sometimes occur.

Helping Achieve Independence

The outlook for stroke rehabilitation is better today than ever before. After a stroke, some people experience a complete or nearly complete recovery. Still, approximately half of stroke survivors will be left with some kind of permanent disability. The success of rehabilitation depends on many factors, including:

  • Its timing. The earlier rehabilitation begins, the more likely you are to regain lost abilities and skill.
  • The extent of brain injury. People with milder injuries are likely to benefit the most. But even with slight improvement, rehabilitation can mean the difference between functioning independently and needing assistance for your activities.
  • Its intensity and frequency. Studies suggest that greater intensity and frequency of therapy improve functional outcomes. Even if rehabilitation sessions are scheduled only a few times a week, therapeutic exercises should be done on a daily basis.
  • Your outlook and attitude. Motivation and a positive attitude are key to obtaining an optimal level of recovery. Rehabilitation requires a willingness to work hard.
  • The cooperation of friends and family. Companionship and emotional support are essential to rehabilitation. Caregivers also play an important role in assisting with rehabilitation exercises and therapies, and helping you maintain improvement.

What Is Involved

The purpose of rehabilitation is to reach the highest possible level of independence. What you do in rehabilitation depends on what skills you need to become independent. A major part of rehabilitation is often physical training and therapy. This may involve training with mobility skills, such as relearning to walk or learning to self-propel a wheelchair; balancing skills; and maximizing the range of motion in your joint.

Rehabilitation may also involve relearning self-care skills including eating, grooming, bathing, and dressing or learning to adapt how you perform these tasks to compensate for your disability. Addressing cognitive skills, including memory and problem solving, and communication and social skills are also important parts of rehabilitation. You may also learn how to reorganize your living space to make it safer and more accessible.

Because numerous impairments may be involved, rehabilitation is facilitated by a diverse team, which may include doctors specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrists), physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, rehabilitation nursing, social workers, and others. Although each team member lends particular expertise, the team works together to help recovery.

Advances

The brain was once thought to be a static organ brain cells could die but not be repaired or regained. In recent years, due to research studies and advances in brain imaging techniques, doctors and researchers are gaining a new understanding of how brain systems adapt after stroke to regain function (brain plasticity).

After injury, efforts are geared towards maximizing function in spite of the damaged brain. In some research models, scientists observed the brain cells surrounding a damaged area undergo changes in function and shape that allow them to take on the functions of the damaged cells. Results indicate that similar changes occur in human brains after a stroke and other trauma.

Researchers have hypothesized that stem cells one day may enable damaged brain areas to recover their function. Other therapies to encourage the regeneration of damaged brain cells are also being explored. Many other recent advances may play a role in retraining injured areas of the brain and helping to stimulate use of paralyzed or weakened areas of the body. Other advances include:

  • Constraint-induced therapy. This therapy involves restricting the use of an unaffected or less affected limb while intensively training the more-affected limb. This helps improve limb function.
  • Forced-use therapy. With conventional forced-use therapy, therapists manually assist with thousands of movement repetitions to help the injured brain relearn how to accomplish tasks with an impaired limb. Researchers are exploring the use of robots to assist with these movements.
  • Electrical stimulation and biofeedback. Functional electrical stimulation involves the use of electricity to stimulate muscles weakened or paralyzed by a stroke to cause them to contract. In biofeedback, a sensor is placed over a target muscle, and when that muscle is successfully moved, the electrical activity generated by that muscle is picked up by the sensor and used to provide biofeedback to the individual. The goal is to help a stroke survivor become more aware of the means to move the target muscle and achieve the movement more easily. Some rehabilitation facilities combine these two methods to speed muscle and nerve retraining.
  • Cortical simulation. With this technique, an electrical current is used to stimulate the motor cortex in the brain. Studies have shown that it improves the performance of a paralyzed limb. However, it hasn’t yet been approved for clinical use.
  • Wiihabilitation. Many stroke patients require interactive physical therapy, which they may find boring and sometimes painful. But doctors have found that Nintendo’s Wii video game system, is an excellent substitute as the games motion-sensitive controller requires body movements similar to traditional therapy but provides so much distraction and more enjoyment for stroke patients. Rehab doctors in the Philippines have started to use it to help stroke patients regain movement in their arms and legs. The local experience, for example, at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center, had been favorable.

In addition to these therapies, pioneering work is being done in the area of virtual reality. These simulations and training methods encourage the brain to reorganize to compensate for the damage. They’re designed to improve range of motion, balance, strength, and other measures of motor function.

However, none of these treatment methods has been shown to be significantly better than willful, task-specific practice of a motor behavior. A willingness to work towards improvement is one of the most important ingredients of successful rehabilitation.

Call for Help: Merck Osena Hospitalization and Healing Fund

Our youngest brother Merck Osena suffered a stroke last August 24, 2017. We rushed him to the hospital at 2AM and have undergone 2 neurosurgical operations within his first 24 hours. The first operation was to remove the blood clot and the second one is to stop the bleeding and relieve pressure in his brain (craniectomy).

Currently he is recovering, but his right side is immobile/weak and some of his cognitive functions are affected. His doctors are very optimistic about his full recovery as he is relatively young (36 years old) and does not have any vices. The next step for his recovery is for him to undergo regular physical and occupational therapy sessions. Merck himself is very responsive and eager to get his strength back.

However, the hospitalization costs and procedures have all drained his and the family’s savings, mainly due to the 2 neurosurgical operations, our long stay in the ICU and the doctor’s professional fees. Even though he has a health card, it is not enough to cover his hospital bills. The whole family is helping each other with the hospital expenses but our pooled funds is still short to cover all.

Our family is knocking on your generous hearts to help us with Merck’s hospitalization, healing and recovery. Your kindness will make a lot of difference for the life of our dearest brother. Merck’s has a lot to live for, the love of his family, supportive friends, a great job, and a wonderful future.

Thank you and God bless!

Free Everwing Cheats and Tips

Hi Guys! You might have heard of the game Everwing 🙂

Everwing is vertical scrolling shooting game in which player control characters (called guardians) and their dragon sidekick. When I first played it I am reminded of Twin Bee shooter game of the 80’s (hehehe I’m old school gamer), but now it’s on your mobile phone and Facebook messenger so it’s cool!

In the game, guardians are like your avatar with special abilities and together with dragon/sidekicks they will fight monsters and bosses. A great game and I think most of you have received an invite via Facebook messenger. So if you looking for Free Everwing cheats and tips, you are lucky because I will share my most effective Free Six Everwing Cheats:

My first Everwing cheat: Focus on one guardian, and level it up as soon as you can for better damage output.

Given the following basic guardians:

  • Alice – starting guardian.
  • Fiona – Dragons sidekicks get 2x XP. Unlock @ level 2. Cost: 1,000 coins
  • Sophia – 2x faster completing Quests. Unlock @ level 3. Cost: 12,000 coins
  • Lily – Earn you 2x Coins. Unlock @ level 6. Cost: 30,000 coins
  • Aurora – Coin and Items power up Magnet! Unlock @ level 19. Cost: 150,000 coins
  • Lenore – Has 2 lives. Unlock @ level 25. Cost: 150,000 coins

Fiona (the 2x-XP dragon) is a good choice to level up early so you can have good damage output while leveling
And when Aurora (the item magnet guardian) is available, it will be good to start using it and level up as your main .
Get Lenore too as soon as you have the coins. Lenore is in my opinion the best among the basic guardians when fighting Everwing bosses because of her 2 lives.

My 2nd Everwing cheat: Do quests, even without playing the game
Quests are great free Everwing coins magnet:

And Everwing have good integration with FB messenger (via Gamebot feature) and you can do quests by just some clicks inside Facebook messenger app.

My 3rd Everwing cheat: Create groups of combination of friends for the game invite/challenge
Everwing have some challenges wherein you need to invite new friends or group of friends for a game.

And if you complete 10 (or 30) you get special prize (a dragon egg or a powerful guardian).

Example you have 5 friends actively playing Everwing (Alice, Bob, Chuck, Dave, and Eve) so you need to invite/challenge them individually (5 invite count already) and then create groups of combination of friends and challenge that group.

Example of combinations (in addition to the 5 individual invites)
Create group of you + (2 friends)
6. Alice + Bob
7. Alice + Chuck
8. Alice + Dave
9. Alice + Eve
10. Bob + Chuck
11. Bob + Dave
12. Bob + Eve
13. Chuck + Dave
14. Chuck + Eve
15. Dave + Eve

Then create group of You + 3 friends
16. A+B+C
17. A+B+D
18. A+B+E
19. B+C+D
20. B+C+E
… and so on…

Then create group of You + 4 friends.

Then with 5 friends 🙂

But remember: The important thing here is that you DO NOT Spam Non-Everwing FB friends

My 4th Everwing Tip: Fight Bosses and make sure you max-out reward damage
How to know max-out reward damage, see this pic below (look for the red boxed part):

This means by completing this damage bar, you will have more chances of getting good dragon eggs.

My 5th Everwing Cheat: Evolve Dragons with same zodiac.

Zodiac is those symbols beside the dragon.

At level 10 and 20, you can evolve the dragons by merging same-type dragons. Same zodiac evolved means extra damage. Proof? See:

I know it’s tempting to evolve dragons…

But at later levels you will need the highest possible damage in Everwing so this extra damage will really be needed, and you will regret not evolving same zodiac-dragons.

My last Everwing Cheat of the day: Enjoy the game with real friends 🙂

This means interacting and encouraging your real life friends to play Everwing with you. I have some friends IRL and we do friendly Trash Talk 🙂 to make the game more enjoyable and the game is more fun for us this way 🙂 . We also have a family Everwing group and many family members are active damaging the Everwing boss collaboratively for the everwing prizes.

That’s all of my free six Everwing Cheats and Tips for the day! Hope you like it!

How about you? Do you have everwing tips and cheats too? Feel free to share it by leaving some comments below 🙂

On Bitcoin, the Philippines and Coins.PH

I love bitcoins and cryptocurrencies and I wrote some articles about bitcoin here at menardconnect.com and in our company security blog some years back.

I also delved into mining crypto-coins but my electricity costs and my alt-coin mining difficulty is at odds so I re-assessed the situation and concluded it was not cost effective anymore. So I stopped mining some years ago and I monitored the bitcoin  scene and its infosec connection from the sidelines of social media.

This year, I read that Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) issued some guidelines on virtual currencies  and for me this is some sort keeping up with the times of BSP (hehe acceptance of reality maybe)  and is a long awaited good news overall. So I decided that the time is ripe for Philippines and Bitcoin so I searched what my friend Dexter of TechAthand.net and BestofRiyadh.com mentioned in one of his posts that a PH-based company is offering an easy way to buy bitcoins and do purchases and remittances with cheaper costs. So I researched more about that company (Coins.PH) and find that it’s very promising 🙂 . Luckily, a friend IRL mentioned that he is using Coins.PH too so this sealed the deal.

I registered at the Coins.PH website and downloaded the iOS app and tried using the Coins.PH services. And I am very happy to say that Coins.PH is very easy to use and is really promising as lot of merchants are using it to sell e-loads, pay bills (for telco/utilities like meralco) and allow sending of remittances. Payment is very easy too (via G-cash, 7-11 stores, Cebuana Lhuillier or bank transaction (online or OTC (over-the-counter). These are my top choices of payment but you can see other options in the website or app and use what is convenient for you. From my personal checking, the app and the website is secure, but of course I will be constantly be vigilant about this and will check it from time to time. I know that good security practices with your mobile phone and computing machines (PC/Macs) is a must for the overall security and safety of bitcoins transaction and other online financial activities. Update: I also had some good experience dealing with the support folks on some issues so this is another plus for them 🙂

To show my appreciation and support to Coins.PH and the bitcoin community around the world and in the Philippines I am doing this awareness post on Bitcoins and Coins.PH. I strongly recommend that you, my readers, friends (online and IRL) and supporters try Coins.PH too by registering using my Coins.PH referral link . Registration is FREE, but the good thing with registering using my Coins.ph link, we both earn 50 pesos each (credited to our Coins.PH wallet) when you complete the verification process. To complete the verification process they will require Identification (ID) card upload as to prevent potential abuse (hehehe shoutout to our friends at BSP and AMLC 😀 ). If you are not comfortable about uploading your ID and complete the verification it’s A-OK too, the only drawback is that you will have some daily transaction limit (P2,000) but still, the basic account can be a good way to try and have a hands-on feel on how to do wallet and bitcoin transactions.

Again I invite you to try Coins.PH  its FREE and SAFE. And as the saying goes… there is no harm in trying 🙂

Hope you like my bitcoin and Coins.ph post. If you like bitcoin and coins.ph too please feel free to leave a comment at the end of this post or leave some comments at our facebook page.

Mobile Legends Tips and Cheats: My Favorite Six Heroes

Mobile Legends MoBA is a very exciting game. It’s so hot too that I’ve got lots of FB friends that are into it too. Even a local telco joined in the MoBA fray and organized a Mobile Legends MoBA tournament of sorts recently. For me Mobile Legends is like DotA (Defense of the Ancients) but for the mobile phones. My last MoBA was DoTA (haha forgive me if I’m an old school gamer) so it was an instant hit for me when my family members invited me to try it out.

And since I miss posting about games here at menardconnect.com and since Mobile Legends is one of my fave games now, I am posting my six favorite Mobile Legends heroes, in the tradition of my free six video series.

First fave hero is Layla, the starting hero from the tutorial

this one is using the old classic look of Layla, and this hero is the most simple and easy hero to use.

Miya,

my most played hero now (I think) as its very easy to play and have good damage output

Bruno, my alternate maskman/ranged hero

that is sturdier than either Layla or Miya.

Eudora, my favorite mage hero with her electric attacks,

kinda easy to use to (but caveat, shes a little bit fragile)

Yun-Zhao, my favorite assassin and fighter combo

with his trademark move 🙂

And last but not the least, the powerful Freya

The catch with Freya is that she is not free.

I will try to feature some of them (if not all) in future posts here at menardconnect.com but for now we can mark this as Part 1 of my Mobile Legends Tips and Cheats posts.

How about you? Do you like Mobile Legends too? If yes, please share your favorite hero by leaving some comments at the end of this post or leave some comments in our facebook page too.
