Possible New MMDA Number Coding Scheme

I’ve read about this new Possible MMDA Number Coding Scheme in the works, via twitter and interaksyon news website. It seems MMDA folks are contemplating on barring majority of the private vehicles in major roads of the Metro for two days a week (currently 1/week) to solve our traffic woes.

Quoting Interaksyon:

Tolentino spoke to reporters at the sidelines of the two-day 11th Asian Crisis Management Conference (ACMC) at Crowne Plaza, Manila Galleria which the MMDA is hosting.

The planned shift from the current two-digit Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) or the “number-coding” scheme into a four-digit system is just one of the solutions the agency is looking at to resolve traffic woes in the metropolis. The MMDA chief said there is urgency in easing traffic problems in Metro Manila, particularly at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), where more than 325, 000 public and private vehicles, or 1,200 per lane per hour, pass everyday.

Tolentino explained that under the planned new proposal, vehicles get barred from roadways not just once, but twice.

In the scheme being considered, plate numbers ending with the following digits will be banned from major thoroughfares on assigned days, as below:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4 banned on Mondays
  • 5, 6, 7, 8 banned on Tuesdays
  • 9, 0, 1, 2 banned on Wednesdays
  • 3, 4, 5, 6 banned on Thursdays
  • 7, 8, 9, 0 banned on Fridays

When compared to other PH Government agencies, MMDA is of  higher caliber (lumevel-up na sila in my opinion). They made good progressive moves by implementing innovative changes (especially on social media and mobile apps availability). I am just sad that with this new proposal on the number coding scheme, they are back to their good old “band-aid” mentality (tapal-tapal lang muna ang solusyon), as this proposal is definitely a short-sighted one.

I will not post how my officemates, irl-friends and online tweeps reacted to this proposal (but you can read some of their tweets here, here, here and here).

I hope good agencies like MMDA think about long term solutions. For me, a BIG NO to this New MMDA Number Coding Scheme.

Motorist Touches MMDA Scandal


Saw this video via twitter and youtube this evening. And since its such a long time since I last featured a scandal here at menardconnect.com, why not add some flavor to the blog and add one? 🙂

The scandal video is about an irate motorist doing something bad to an MMDA Traffic enforcer. To the benefit of my non-Filipino readers MMDA is Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the government agency in charge the Philippine Capital (NCR/Manila) governance and urban development. MMDA are famous in the streets of the Metro because they do traffic management and enforce road discipline.

Going back to the MMDA and Motorist video.  I do not approve the conduct of the motorist so I’m making him famous in my blog via this Motorist Touches MMDA Scandal video

Some personal comments: I understand that MMDA enforcers are not that famous in the road, but we have to understand, they are just doing their jobs (Trabaho lang, walang personalan!). Yes motorists can contest violation, maybe if they are high with emotion they can do some verbal toooooooot, but what I find very very wrong here is the physical contact.

Plain and Simple: No touch, No Physical Contact, No Foul. The moment the motorist made physical contact with the traffic enforcer (and mind you the video shows that the contact was a very hard physical contact) thats foul and is worth some legal action.

I will not name the motorist (view the Youtube video and other social media sites to get some juicy information about him. Yup full name, company name, address and even linkedin account, and if the account is not available because it was deleted, kindly remember that Google Cache work wonders), but I’m NOT sorry for you Mr. Motorist aka Mr. Purple Guy, because you got very lucky… Ttt…Three times:

  • First, somebody got a camera and caught you doing the dirty scandalous act against the MMDA enforcer on video
  • Second, those people who caught the video are from respectable media organization
  • Third and last, those media people are connected with the TV5 and T3 TV Show, the notorious Tulfo Brothers show!
