Last week I posted that about my WoW hiatus, and today Blizzard posted this video live in Gamescom.

Yup this this the World of Warcraft‘s upcoming expansion, the Warlords of Draenor Cinematic. What can I say? Wow!

The cinematic video features Gul’dan, Hellscream, Mannoroth and lots of orcs of old from the Rise of the Horde book timeline. The warlock is offering the Cup of Unity, the Chalice of Rebirth to the Warsong Chieftain. Warcraft lore fanatics know that the cup contains the blood of Mannoroth, that one that will make all those who drink it forever slave to the demonic powers of the Legion. A definite alternate story because I did not see the other noteworthy characters from the Rise of the Horde (where was Ner’zhul, Blackhand, and Durotan, yup i’ve checked RoH chapter 19, pages 301 to 311 in the paperback). Curiosity will really kill the (drood) cat hehehe! And with the date of release: 11.13.14! Wow! Just wow!

With the description in Youtube

Return to a savage world. Garrosh Hellscream has escaped through the Dark Portal and forged the orc clans of old into a terrifying war machine known as the Iron Horde. Take your place on the front lines of the battle for Draenor 11.13.14.

I’ll delay my Hearthstone post for tomorrow or Sunday! This video needs to be blogged at menardconnect.com.

For now… the end of hiatus is under planning stage na 😀

Hope you liked the Warlords of Draenor Cinematic video too…

Blizzard Confirms Security Breach

Blizzard confirmed that there was a security breach inside their network. Mike Morhaime, Blizzard CEO confirmed the issue via a message entitled “Important Security Update” posted in their official blizzard.com website.

Image Credit: us.blizzard.com

Full message below (with some minor edits as I want to highlight important key points)

Players and Friends,

Even when you are in the business of fun, not every week ends up being fun. This week, our security team found an unauthorized and illegal access into our internal network here at Blizzard. We quickly took steps to close off this access and began working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate what happened.

At this time, we’ve found no evidence that financial information such as credit cards, billing addresses, or real names were compromised. Our investigation is ongoing, but so far nothing suggests that these pieces of information have been accessed.

Some data was illegally accessed, including a list of email addresses for global Battle.net users, outside of China. For players on North American servers (which generally includes players from North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia) the answer to the personal security question, and information relating to Mobile and Dial-In Authenticators were also accessed. Based on what we currently know, this information alone is NOT enough for anyone to gain access to Battle.net accounts.

We also know that cryptographically scrambled versions of Battle.net passwords (not actual passwords) for players on North American servers were taken. We use Secure Remote Password protocol (SRP) to protect these passwords, which is designed to make it extremely difficult to extract the actual password, and also means that each password would have to be deciphered individually. As a precaution, however, we recommend that players on North American servers change their password. Please click this link to change your password. Moreover, if you have used the same or similar passwords for other purposes, you may want to consider changing those passwords as well.

In the coming days, we’ll be prompting players on North American servers to change their secret questions and answers through an automated process. Additionally, we’ll prompt mobile authenticator users to update their authenticator software. As a reminder, phishing emails will ask you for password or login information. Blizzard Entertainment emails will never ask for your password. We deeply regret the inconvenience to all of you and understand you may have questions. Please find additional information here.

We take the security of your personal information very seriously, and we are truly sorry that this has happened.

Sincerely,
Mike Morhaime

I commend Blizzard‘s open communication and security mindset regarding this security breach. I blogged about some potential security issue with their password a few months ago (Blizzard’s Battle.Net Password: NOT Case-sensitive) and also noted that they have improved their overall security measures as compared to the previous years, in my recent post (Malware Blog – World of Warcraft Scams: Mist of Pandaria, Free Mounts and Phishing Galore).

I am heeding their call for the Battle.net password change request, and I am encouraging my fellow World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 and Diablo III Fans, Players, Friends and readers to do the same, as a support to Blizzard‘s security campaign.

Be safe people, in game and outside the game, online and offline!

Blizzard’s Battle.Net Password: NOT Case-sensitive

I was checking my twitter feed last week and I read from Mikko Hypponen (F-Secure) feed some interesting story about Blizzard and Diablo 3 password security.

The link points to Battle.net forum discussion about Diablo 3 password being not case sensitive. It was a good read and I was intrigued by the reply of the Blizzard QA. And so what would I do next? What else but to try it out too…

password1234 => OK
PASSword1234 => OK
PassWORD1234 => OK
PaSsWoRd1234 => OK

Sad but true! Yes, Blizzard’s Battle.Net passwords are NOT Case-sensitive. And after X number of years, it just that day I’ve known about it 🙂

The Battle.net forum post has some interesting discussion. I’m really amazed on how the Blizzard dude replied to the issue and his/her explanation (I agree its worthy of the Post/Reply of the Year). Good #gaming and #security read too on the technical details on the combinations (and how hard to hack them), the use of the authenticator and other related stuff.

I guess this will really boil down into striking a balance between a lot of factors including security and user experience.

Read the full Battle.net forum discussion

I don’t had much experience with other MMORPG/online gaming password systems, but do you know if they have the same issue too?

Feel free to share your feedback and comment below.

Blizzard DOTA Release Date, Cheats and Tricks

I’m a DOTA fan and I mentioned it in my about page. So when the buzz came out that Blizzard DOTA will be released, I got excited and looked around to check if Blizzard DOTA is a real deal.

But some basic facts for the uninitiated in the DotA ritual: DOTA stands for Defense of the Ancients, it is a custom map for Blizzard‘s Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos (War3) and Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (TFT or War3x). DOTA puts two teams of players against each other: the Sentinel versus the Scourge. The Sentinels defend the World Tree while the Scourge protect their Frozen Throne.

Along with the Mist of Pandaria announcement, Blizzard also showcased some trailer for Blizzard DOTA in Blizzcon 2011. Blizzard DOTA release date was also revealed there 🙂

Image Credit: Blizzard.com

Quoting the introduction text of Blizzard DOTA

In a tiny, trans-dimensional pocket universe sit two dark and terrible gods. One red. One blue. To amuse themselves, they kidnap great heroes from across time and space! And those heroes come from one company: Blizzard! These heroes are forced to fight to the death in an endless battle with no purpose…other than ladder points.

It features a lot of familiar names from Blizzard games. You’ll hear familiar names of Thrall (ex Horde Warchief), Arthas (ex Lich King), Sylvanas (of the Forsaken) and Muradin Bronzebeard (and if I get it right I saw a Paladin that looks like Uther Lightbringer) from the Warcraft game. We will also see heroic figure like Nova, Zeratul and Za’gara from the Starcraft fame, and some notable characters from Diablo franchise too.

As per intro text Blizzard tell some stuff related to ladder points. This can only mean that Blizzard DotA may be a custom map or custom map editor for Starcraft 2 and it upcoming expansions.

Rumor also say that it will be available via Blizzard Arcade. Blizzard Arcade is some sort of marketplace for custom maps in Starcraft 2. The marketplace idea is very feasible because that is where the money is (just like the Android Market or the Apple App Store concepts).

Details are not clear, but one sure detail is that Blizzard DOTA release date is soon, soonish to be exact 🙂

Watch the Blizzard DOTA release date video below for more details:

I will keep you updated if there are new developments on Blizzard DOTA. If there are Blizzard DOTA cheats or Blizzard DOTA tricks I will let you know too 🙂

Power Overwhelming: Starcraft 2 Release on July 27, 2010

***
Update 2010.07.27

Nuclear Launch Detected!!!

Nice!

Making this blog post sticky 🙂
***
Its final: Starcraft II will be released on July 27, 2010. Blizzard announced that Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will simultaneously hit the stores in North America (United States, Canada) Europe, Asia and the Pacific (South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau) on that same day.

Some new Starcraft 2 video courtesy of Yahoo Video

Starcraft 2: Unexpected Encounter @ Yahoo! Video

The games is available in two packages: A USD60 retail boxed copy and a USD100 collectors box copy which comes with an art book, a soundtrack and an exclusive in game pet for WoW (World of Warcraft) and some other cool Blizzard stuffs.

We will be seeing once again the Terrans battle it out with the Zergs and Protoss and for me this is really exciting since the game developers have been giving out some teasers for more than a year already.

The game time-line is set four years after the Starcraft: Brood War campaign ended and fans will be seeing familiar characters like Raynor, Zeratul, Kerrigan, Mengsk and many more.

Thanks to SpiderHam for the related Starcraft II article.

Are you excited for the Starcraft 2 release too? Feel free to leave some comments here.
