My guess (posted in my last month’s Firefox malware post) proved to be true. This week is Apple and Mac‘s turn on the malware spotlight.
Trend Micro and Intego reported seeing a malicious file (read: trojan) packaged inside a cracked version of iWork 09, the productivity suite recently released by Apple. The cracked iWork 09 is being circulated via the popular peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing protocol Bittorrent. Upon installation of the cracked iWork 09 package, the malicious file (detected by Trend Micro as OSX_KROWI.A) is then automatically executed and can make the Macintosh machine compromised.
Interested to read the full techie details? Check out Trendlabs’ blog and Intego’s advisory.
I suggest that whenever you download any application software via P2P site, try to scan them first with your antivirus, anti-spyware and other security programs and check out for any suspicious files or detection. And remember that even Macs are not that safe nowadays.
A friend of mine sent out some chinese new year’s greeting yesterday to both his pinoy and chinese friends. Since the greetings is for prosperity and good luck, I would like to share it in this blog:
Chinese New Year is fast approaching! Jan 25 – New Year’s Eve and Jan 26 – Chinese New Year!
Here are some tips and things to prepare for the coming new year. Please prepare it on Jan 25 🙂
Please pay all your bills before the new year. This is to ensure that you won’t have “utang” in the entire year of 2009.
Do not spend money on Jan 26 as much as possible. Prepare a fish dish on Jan 25 evening.
For luck and health, you need to prepare the following: (No substitutes please) 2 pcs of pineapple, 4 pcs of pear, 10 pcs of bananas, 2 packs of gold coin candy, 2 pcs of Chinese Mamon or Huat Ke, 2 boxes of tikoy – glutinous rice cake. Place them in the dining table on New Year’s Eve and eat some of them on New Year’s Day.
For money, you need to gather coins (those 5 cents or 10 cents coin so that you can gather a lot) and walk backwards from your gate while sprinkling the coins. Sprinkle the coins to each entrance or door of your house. Do this before going out of the house on New Year’s Day.
Good Luck and Happy New Year again!
I hail from a traditional Filipino family and I see some similarities on the two culture’s new year’s traditions. For one, the paying of the bills and not spending on the new year’s day was one also preached and practiced by my parents when we were kids in Quezon. The fruits for the new year I even written a post here in my blog. The traditions varies (from being weird, uncommon to logical, quite OK) and as long as they are for prosperity, good health, peace, harmony and other positive things I’m fine with them.
Taken from a gasoline station in San Juan, Manila, Philippines yesterday January 20, 2009.
Lowest price right? Even if other gasoline stations from the same oil company (Big 3) sell their unleaded gas @ 32.57 pesos per liter, this lone station offers the best bargain price 🙂
No. I don’t own the gas station. I don’t even know the owner; I’m just an ordinary blogger who would like to share with my fellow blogger/drivers out there the good deals that I can find while on the road.
If you’re interested to know where exactly this station is, drop some comments here at the end of the post 🙂
Venue will be SM Mall of Asia Grounds. Save the date: March 7, 20098PM.
My source? Its not Ely, its not Raimz, its not Marcus, its not Buddy. (I am just an avid fan 🙂 ). Its Ticketworld. If you still don’t believe me go to their site.
I don’t know if I myself can afford the VIP tickets. I’m saving up for 2 tickets (one for me and one for Raven) so most probably we will get the gold one. Don’t worry, I will scan it and post it here at menardconnect as soon as I have it :-p
Today is Inauguration Day of Barack Obama, President of the United States of America. There are many sites out there offering live video coverage and all those free stuffs. But one last reminder: please be careful, some of these sites may be scam sites or worst… they have redirects to malicious content (read: malware).
TrendLabs reported a noticeable malware activities related to Barack Obama and his inauguration day. The activities started last week and new Downad, Waledac, and Bancosmalware variants were found to be riding on the Obama inauguration event. Some URLs are sent via unsolicited mails (read: SPAM) and are using social engineering techniques that fool internet users that they came from respectable news agency like CNN. Full Details HERE and HERE.
My advise/s for the day:
1. Stick to respectable news and information sites (CNN, Time, Google, Yahoo, etc.)
2. Verify your URLs (the ones after the http thingie). Respectable news and information sites usually do not have redirects to other sites (other than their own).
3. Make sure your Antivirus and other security software programs are up to date. And of course your Operating Systems (OS) should be patched. I know AV software program may not be enough, but AV + patched OS is a good start.
4. Be safe online.
Skype is a normal thing for me. It keeps me connected to my colleagues and friends who, for one reason or another, do not have Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger or ICQ (more common chat applications for me)
But interesting scenarios can also happen with Skype.
Take this example:
An unknown girl user pops a message to me
Her photo in the profile is not so bad (it depends on each individual’s taste I guess) and may even be considered by many as “seductive”.
Remember what our parents told us when we were kids? “Never talk to strangers!”. But hey I say to myself I’m a big boy now and I can handle myself. (In a more serious tone: I’m overexposed to these kinds of stuffs given the industry that I’m into (see my about page), so do not worry! But a small warning: Kids: Do not try this at home).
I gamely reply some 1 or 2-liners. “What?” or “Who you?”
She replies with some more cheesy or seductive lines like: “I’m so lonely!” or “I want to meet some people“.
Jackpot? Well not quite.
I reply some classic 1-liner. “OK” or “Yes”
She invites me to do some dirty stuff. Read on…
The real mature instincts in me takes over. NO outright clicks. Did my quickie research and Bingo!!! Confirmed link is a p0rn/pr0n site. Pr0n sites do more damage than good. Did the right thing:
Block this person from contacting me again 🙂 Click OK button.
End of Story.
My guess: Most probably this chatter is a bot and it sends out advertisements for their adult site. I did the common 1 or 2-word replies so that the bot will likely respond positively (and then I have a story to post here 🙂 ).
Moral lesson of the story:
1. Be Smart! Stay safe online!
2. Parents, this may happen to your kids. So spend some quality online time with them (This can happen in YM, AOL and ICQ too)
I hope this makes sense.
Hope you always have a safe online experience.
P.S. Don’t ask me to give out the pr0n site link. I won’t give in 🙂
If you have same experiences online, kindly drop me some comments.
Valley Golf and Country Club officials have released their findings and recommendations on this golf brawling incident. They expelled Delfin dela Paz for “disorderly conduct in instigating the brawl”. Bambee and Lino, since they are dependents of the expelled member were prohibited from the golf course. Secretary NasserPangandaman Sr. was suspended for two years, while his sons Masiu Town Mayor Nasser Jr. and Hussein were “banned for life” from the golf club’s premises. For the complete details of this read inquirer.net article.
I just hope and pray that the officials of the posh Antipolo golf club acted fairly and is 100% based on real accounts of eyewitnesses. I will let proper courts settle this issue.
Personally, I don’t know both camps. I also don’t play golf (I’m a poor boy, no money for golf) so I should stay away from this issue. But what the heck, this site happens to be my blog and one of the little privileges I’ve got here is to have my own online political rant space. So my comment:
The camp of the Agrarian Reform Secretary is saying that they are victims of trial by publicity. Quoting the DAR Secretary in inquirer.net article.
He said that Bambee’s e-mail, widely used in newspaper accounts without the Pangandaman comment, had hurt the family.
C’mon Mr. Secretary, that’s such a lamer (and “such a loser yaya”) statement and excuse. You and your camp can do better than that 🙂 like what… errrr… let me see… hire some PR guys (or an army of bloggers in disguise) to do your counter-trial by publicity. Or was the “Tides of Darkness” brought by the wrath of the bloggers too much “Power Overwhelming” for you and your minions?
To the board of directors of the golf club, maybe you can revisit your guidelines on hazardous items that cannot be brought to the golf club. Knives and baseball bats should be banned I agree, and firearms too. Firearms are dangerous too they can also kill you know.
I wish my comments above are not that malicious for me to get a libel charge. In the event that you find this post libelous, drop me a note in the contact page . I’m not a lawyer but please give me some heads up so that I can consult some fellow bloggers who knows much about libel and law (will get permission from them if I can post their links here) or if they are not available I can consult my other friends. Or if you have other opinions (whether assenting or dissenting or even non-sense) or you cannot understand what “tides of darkness”, “power overwhelming” and “you’re such a loser yaya” means, drop me some comments here, I’m very open to suggestions and criticisms.
Its confirmed and final 🙂 MTV-Philippines Press conference for the March 7, 2009Eraserheads Reunion Concert (Part 2) was held this afternoon at Italianni’s restaurant on Bonifacio High Street in Taguig. Venue is set: SM Mall of Asia.
Ely, Marcus, Raimund and Buddy took turns in answering questions from the media and they reiterated that this 2nd Reunion concert will be totally different (and not just a continuation of the August 30, 2008 concert). Ely confirmed that his health is in good condition. The band members estimated that they will be playing around 20+ songs.
Inquirer’s Showbiz and Style have the complete video at their SITE and I just captured the image above. Sorry I cannot embed the video in my blog because I think its in different format (VDO?). Kindly check it out at their site (Its the 3rd video from the gallery as of writing this post).
There’s also a video in youtube but the quality is not yet good and the author will repost. I will embed it here as soon as author posted his updated video.
Diane Ventura (Ely Buendia’s manager) had a phone interview with News on Q (QTV) and confirmed the Eheads Reunion Part 2 concert on March 7. She said Ely was given official go signal by his doctors.
Quoting GMANews.TV report:
“To the fans, I know I’m speaking for the whole band when I say that they’re looking forward to seeing you on March 7. See you there,” Ventura said in a phone interview aired on “News on Q.”
Ventura said the concert would be held to give Eraserheads fans closure.
I’m so excited!!!
Early this morning I was busy posting about the Eheads Reunion Concert DVD and this news seems to be information overload. And now…
The Eraserheads Reunion Concert Part 2 is now a reality special thanks to MTV and Smart. Dubbed as the “Final Set” it is slated on March 7, 2009. Venue is still in the works. Philstar’s Supreme posted this:
It’s confirmed. The Eraserheads concert “The Final Set” is set.
Save the date: March 7, 2009. The concert is produced by MTV and Smart with the venue yet to be announced.
For now, it’s a tossup between The Fort and SM Mall of Asia grounds.
They’re just about to sign the contract and will have their press conference on January 19.
For the part 2 tickets, sorry no info yet. I’ll post details here as soon as I have them. For now, I’ll settle with playing the Eheads Reunion CD over and over again 🙂
Wow! The Eraserheads Reunion Concert DVD will be out on January 31, 2009.
Sony BMG Music Entertainment Philippines announced this on their website:
It shall go down local music history as that singular moment where four estranged band members – Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro – came together for one spectacular reunion – 08.30.08. One band. One great show. One night only.
The historic performance of the country’s biggest band in the 90s that drew in more than 50,000 people at The Fort Bonifacio Open Field on Aug. 30, 2008, will be immortalized in one DVD – plus bonus features of behind-the-scene footages, rehearsals, etc.
I hope it will include the early morning rehearsals (Sembreak) as well as the funny “Group Hug” cheers of the crowd.
I will definitely grab this DVD for my viewing pleasure and collection and will blog it FTW! Remember my Eheads Reunion Concert CD post?
I took this picture from a gasoline station in San Juan, Manila, Philippines last Monday night:
I have filled up my tank twice already (one before the New Year and one last Monday night) and its really PHP 30.10, this is the lowest price I can remember in the last 12 months. I’m posting this since I’m very curious on how the other stations (same oil company) offer the same unleaded gasoline at PHP 33.07 and PHP 32.97. I asked the gasoline boy on why their price is lower than the others he says he doesn’t know. Btw, forget about the price of the premium gas, I think there’s something wrong with the LED system.
are interested to know where exactly is this gasoline station (hey this is good savings if you’re in the vicinity) or
know the reason for the non-standard pricing of this oil company or
